A vs B Design Polls Won’t Make You a Better Designer

I’ve seen a lot of social media posts showing two UI options side by side like:

“Which one is better? Option A 👍 or Option B ❤️”

It often shows a product card, price, color swatches, and an “Add to Cart” button. No context. No specified device. No stated goal.

What surprised me is not only how often these show up, but also how much engagement they get. People write long comments trying to prove why their choice is better.

But neither is better to me, because there’s nothing to evaluate. No user, no problem to solve, and no real purpose behind the design.

This kind of post may boost engagement, but they don’t make a better designer. Because good design isn’t just about moving pixels around on a canvas or making things look good.

It’s about solving problems. And you can’t improve a design if you don’t know what needs improving.

Want to design better? Start here.

  • Define the goal before jumping on Figma
  • Study real products how top apps solve similar problems
  • Spot patterns and notice where they differ
  • Ask questions on what’s necessary here, and why?

Find the common patterns. They’re answers to repeatable problems. They help you understand what matters, what’s missing, and what could be better.

  • What content is required
  • How information is prioritized
  • Where opportunities for improvement is

Then look for problems where good design starts.

Lastly, Take your time. You won’t be a master of design in a day. Real growth comes from thoughtful iteration and learning by doing.
